Why it worked
We didn't focus on statistics alone. We focused on people.
Many of the stories featured in our campaign came directly from Gazan volunteers working alongside our organization. They shared what it was like to flee their homes, leave parents, siblings, and loved ones behind, and arrive in Egypt carrying little more than uncertainty about the future.
Donors weren't reading about a crisis happening somewhere far away. They were hearing directly from individuals who had lived through it.
These stories transformed the donation experience from a transaction into a human connection. Supporters learned about children trying to continue their education after displacement, parents struggling to provide stability for their families, and young adults navigating life in a foreign country while worrying daily about loved ones still trapped in a war zone.
At the same time, we made the impact of each donation clear. Donors could see how their contributions helped provide educational opportunities, food assistance, transportation, housing support, and other essentials for families rebuilding their lives.
The combination of authentic storytelling and tangible impact created trust, empathy, and action.
One thing another nonprofit could repeat
Let the people you serve tell their own stories.
The most powerful fundraising messages often come from those living the reality of the problem you're trying to solve. Authentic voices create a level of connection that organizations cannot manufacture. When donors can see the humanity behind a cause and understand exactly how their gift helps, they become partners in the story rather than simply contributors.
Our biggest lesson was simple: people give to people. When supporters felt connected to the individuals behind the headlines, generosity followed.
